Forest Management
The County Board of Legislators approved a management plan to allow SWCD to manage the County’s 5500 acres of forest. Reforestation involves a sustained yield of forest products annually, in addition to maintaining several miles of trails, including the Washington Park Day Use Facility. The forestry program has earned in excess of $300,000 in timber sales and received $190,000 in grants for the Jefferson County Forests.

Recreational Trail Coordinator
SWCD works with the Trail Advisory Board created in 2006 to develop and coordinate recreational trails throughout Jefferson County. The Advisory Board consists of various individuals and organizations in our community. A multi-use pilot trail through Lorraine, Worth, and Rodman connecting Oswego to Lewis County was approved in August 2008; opening trails on County forest property. The results of opening this trail will allow us to monitor the environmental, societal, and economical impacts for future trail systems. trailjeffersoncounty.com

Water Quality
The water in your well can change several times throughout the year, so it’s a good idea to test your well at least once a year to make sure it is safe for consumption. Contamination, such as bacteria, is often the result of improper well placement and/or well construction and protection. Our technicians are available to assist you in resolving water quality concerns.

Hydroseeding
Hydroseeding is a cost-effective, one pass solution to establish erosion control. Our hydroseeder holds 900 gallons of the hydro-slurry, which is a combination of grass seed, fertilizer, tacifier, mulch, and water that is applied during a single application. As the slurry is applied, the all natural wood fiber mulch and the tacifier bond to the soil which provides almost instantaneous protection. This mixture is designed for faster seed germination by retaining moisture and heat, which creates a better environment for the grass seed to germinate. This service is available to any landowner implementing conservation practices and all municipalities within Jefferson County.
In more traditional methods, several passes would be necessary to spread seed, fertilizer, and mulch, in addition to the intensive labor involved in moving the mulch hay.
