The Envirothon is a series of interactive contests in which teams of
local high school students compete against one another in areas such as
soils, aquatics, forestry, and wildlife. The competitors are judged in
many areas, including their insightful solutions to environmental
concerns and their video productions. Combining hands-on education with
the excitement of friendly competition, the Envirothon is an effective
tool we utilize to assist our schools in promoting environmental
awareness.
The 17th
Annual Envirothon was held on April 28, 2010 at the NYS Zoo at
Thompson Park. Alexandria Central School won the competition,
taking home trophies and savings bonds.
They
represented Jefferson County at the NYS Envirothon held on June 2 and 3
at Keuka College.
Tioga County won the NYS Competition and they will represent NYS
in the
Canon Envirothon at Fresno University in
California, August
1-7. Congratulations!

| Each May, SWCD educates 5th
grade students of Jefferson County on important safety issues.
Presentations are made by local agencies on safety topics, such as: PTO
Danger Demonstration, ATV Safety, Fire Safety/Prevention, Animal Safety,
Firearm Safety, and Lawnmower Safety. The groups of students rotate
throughout the day so that they are able to hear each presentation. The
students enjoy a fun-filled day, including a dairy tour of the Robbins
family farm.
This event is held at Old McDonald’s Farm in Sackets
Harbor, and it is available to all Jefferson County schools. A BOCES
co-ser grant makes this program possible.
The 8th Annual Farm Home Safety
Day Camp, sponsored by Jefferson County Soil & Water Conservation
District, was held at Old McDonald’s Farm on Thursday, May 20, 2010.
5th grade students from Lyme, Alexandria Bay, and Sackets Harbor
enjoyed a trip to the farm to learn about Lawnmower Safety, ATV Safety,
Fire Prevention, Animal Safety, Electrical Safety, and Firearm Safety.
While learning tractor safety tips, students witnessed the dangers of a
PTO. Representatives from Watertown Fire Department, Cornell Cooperative
Extension, National Grid, and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department
spent the day providing students with lifesaving information.
Students toured North Harbor Dairy Farm on a wagon through their free
stall barn and calf barns. Students also enjoyed a hay ride, feeding
pigs and cows along the ride. Local dairy princesses distributed milk
and ice cream to the students. After an enjoyable day at the farm,
students left with goodie bags filled with lots of informational safety
items and memories of a fun-filled day.
