Sandy Creeks 9E Watershed Plan Update: Monitoring, modeling, and scenarios are complete!

Upstate Freshwater Institute (UFI) has calibrated the GWLF-E watershed model to the Sandy Creeks watershed using the real-world results of our 2023 water sampling efforts and evaluated the community-selected scenarios, including:

- Increased precipitation

- Reduced manure spreading

- Increased development (solar farms, housing, etc.)

- Conversion of fallow agricultural land to forests

- Water quality impacts if septic systems in watersheds leading to the Sandy Pond subwatershed were sewered

Join us to:

- See how these scenarios could impact future water quality

- Review draft goals and recommendations

- Share your feedback and help shape the final plan

Our goal is for the completed Sandy Creeks 9E Plan to reflect community values and guide future water quality protection efforts. This plan will help municipalities, organizations, and landowners focus resources where they’ll have the greatest impact and strengthen future grant applications.

We are accepting applications for the Agricultural Environmental Management (AEM) program through NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets. Any producer interested in participating must complete an AEM application by Friday, October 6, 2023, at 3:30 pm. The application is a simple form asking a few questions about your operation and the project you are seeking. The potential projects are too numerous to list. Our Certified Crop Advisor and Certified Nutrient Management Planner is available to assist you. If you’re not sure if your project would be considered, call Justin at (315) 782-2749. (Some projects include air quality, soil health, water quality, wellhead protection, stream management, manure treatment options, pest management, irrigation management, forest management, grasslands farming, organic farming, riparian forest buffers, etc.) If you are new to AEM, your first step would be to complete a short questionnaire (Tier 1) about your operation, and Justin will meet with you to identify any natural resource concerns. Next, Justin will work with you to develop a plan to address those concerns. Projects will be ranked locally, and each application is confidential. Proposed projects must cost less than $200,000 to be considered. Participating in AEM may help you promote your products through the New York State Grown and Certified program. It may also lead to other funding opportunities through NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets. Over one-third of farms throughout New York State participate in AEM! This is a great opportunity, and it is available to all types of farms, large or small. It's also available to ANY producer (dairy, beef, poultry, horses, sheep, goats, maple, honey, fruit/vegetables, vineyards, greenhouse, forestry, etc.). Producers are encouraged to complete the form and submit it, even if you miss the deadline. We will accept continuous signups to be considered for the next round of funding in 2025.:

Jun 1-30, 2017 - Jefferson County Planning, 175 Arsenal Street, Watertown, NYJefferson County Announces Thirty Day Period for Landowners to Submit Requests for Modifications to the Jefferson County Southwest Agricultural District #3 Since 1971, the creation of certified Agricultural Districts under NYS Agriculture and Markets Law has been important to the State and County level efforts to preserve, protect and encourage the development and improvement of agricultural land for the production of food and other agricultural products. NYS Agriculture and Markets Law requires the County Legislature to review a District every eight years after it is created. The County’s Southwest Agricultural District #3 is located within the towns of Hounsfield, Henderson, Ellisburg and portions of the towns of Adams, Watertown and Lorraine. The Southwest District consists of over 75,000 acres. The eight year review process starts with a thirty day review period beginning on June 1, 2017 and ending on June 30, 2017. During this review period landowners may request to add or remove land by completing a survey and submitting it to the Jefferson County Department of Planning. Farmers currently in the District will receive a survey to fill out and farmers who are not currently in the district should contact the Jefferson County Department of Planning (785-3144) to obtain a survey to request being added to the district. This form may also be downloaded from the Jefferson County website, www.co.jefferson.ny.us under IN THE SPOTLIGHT. Town maps showing district parcels may be viewed on the Jefferson County website under GIS Maps, Property Search & Assessment Rolls then click on the Jefferson County Resource Maps Page. Possible benefits to farm operations within NYS Certified Agricultural Districts include: potential eligibility for a special agricultural assessment; support of farming through state agency policies; limitations on the exercise of eminent domain; limitations on benefit assessments in certain improvement districts; and limitations on the enactment of local regulations that unreasonably restrict or regulate a farm operation. At the termination of the thirty day period, the District and any proposed modifications will be referred to the Jefferson County Agriculture and Farmland Protection Board for review and recommendation. A public hearing will be scheduled later this year to discuss the current District, any proposed modifications, and the recommendation of the Jefferson County Agricultural and Farmland Protection Board. Soils & Land Use went to South Jefferson, and the current issue, Agricultural Soil and Water Conservation Stewardship tested portion went to Sackets!
