Lilacs have broad oval leaves with extremely fragrant blossoms in spring. Lilacs are hardy shrubs that can be used as a windbreak or informal hedge when planted 3-4′ apart. Average lifespan is 100 years. New York has identified Lilac as the state bush, while New Hampshire has designated it as the state flower. This shrub is loved by butterflies and birds.
