The Arbor Day Foundation states this is one of the largest hardwood trees in North America. It has a unique gray-brown flaky bark that exposes patches of white, green, and gray. The irregular blotches make it a striking, attractive tree. Near the top the tree becomes very light, almost white.
Tolerates clay soil, occasional flooding, road sale, wet sites. Prefers alkaline, wet soil.
