Multi-trunked shrub is beautiful throughout all four seasons. In the spring, star-shaped white flowers appear in gorgeous clusters. The fruit appears in the summer months and tastes similar to blueberries. Berries are used in pies, syrups, jams, or in any other manner you would use a blueberry. This showy shrub grows as tall as some trees, and the fall foliage is spectacular with bright reddish orange leaves.
Fun fact from the Penn State Extension: “Although the fruit is referred to as a berry, it is actually a pome. A pome is defined as a fruit that has several small seeds surrounded by a membrane in the center of the edible flesh. Serviceberries, apples, pears, and quinces are all pomes and are all botanically members of the family Rosaceae.”
